From May to September wildflower meadows enters its flowering season. During this time the transition into spring brings an abundance of birds and flowers.

The wildflower meadow is now in full bloom, showcasing a vibrant mix of species that mark the height of the spring flowering season.

Beyond their visual beauty, these wildflower meadows play a vital role in supporting local wildlife. The dense and varied plant life offers essential habitats for insects, which in turn provide a crucial food source for birds and small mammals. By offering a continuous food supply and habitat variety, wildflower meadows help sustain biodiversity and contribute to the broader health of the environment during this critical breeding and nesting season.

Maintaining and protecting these meadows is crucial, not only for biodiversity but also for the overall health of the ecosystem. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to intentionally disturb nesting birds, making careful management during this period essential to avoid project delays and potential legal consequences. Having an on-site Ecological Clerk of Works ECoW) during clearance activities helps ensure compliance with wildlife legislation while maintaining project timelines.

To assist in identifying the various wildflowers currently in bloom, the National Plant Monitoring Scheme offers a comprehensive Species Identification Guide (PDF). This guide includes detailed illustrations and descriptions of common UK wildflowers, aiding in accurate identification during your meadow explorations.
