Is a circular economy the answer to global sustainability issues?

Over the past 30 years, concerns regarding the sustainability of natural resources on Earth have steadily grown. These concerns were first notably published in 1987 and we have yet to take definitive action, in fact the overuse of finite resources have since, greatly increased. This has led to further predictions that the lack of natural resources could hit a state of crisis by the year 2050.

This has led to the creation of a circular economy. The heart of this idea is to rid of the current linear, throwaway economy which we have established and instead reinstate an economy that focuses on the replenishment and reuse of materials.

Becoming a circular economy means that fewer resources are being wasted and disposed of, reducing fossil fuel emissions as well as providing the planet with time to breathe and regenerate. The circular economy can repair the damages that have been done and help to protect our future.

Currently, only an estimated 9% of the world’s economy is circular, showing that we are a long way from our goal. However, this change can start now.
